A finished First Year Journal held on a lap: a linen hardcover with the baby's name on the cover

A baby book is only a gift if it gets filled in.

A paper baby book asks a busy mum-to-be or new mum to sit down with a pen and print her photos. In the public parent discussions we reviewed, gifted paper books that never got filled in came up more than once.

  • The Makia app open to the Month Three prompt "These are your favourite things", with the answer written in

On the phone she already holds

A photo and a few words whenever something happens. One memory at a time is enough.

  • The same memory as a designed journal spread: the favourite things answer on the left page and a smiling photo on the right

    Prompts when she wants them

Each chapter has gentle prompts, so she never starts at a blank page. She can leave one out, or come back to it later.

  • A printed linen hardcover baby journal with the baby's name on the cover, held against a pregnant bump

A book printed from her pages

When she’s ready, she orders the linen hardcover from the app. It’s printed from what she wrote, so it’s never an empty book.

Alice — adds moments as they happen, then fills in the details later

Hi, I’m Alice, a mum of two, and I’ve completed both the Baby Bump and the First Year Journal for both of my kids.

What I love most about the Makia journals is the online format. Life with a baby is just so hectic. I love being able to jump on, enter things as they were happening, and then when I had more time, I could go back, add more details, edit and change things around.

That first year, so much happens and it goes by so quickly, so I love having somewhere to record all the milestone memories and little moments all in the one place. And now my kids love looking back at their journals, which is just so special, so I would definitely recommend this journal to any new or expecting mum.

My name is Lauren and I’m a mother of two. I used Makia The Baby Journal to create baby journals of both of my two children.

I found the platform super easy to use and I love the quality of the books once they’re printed. My kids and I love poring over them and remembering everything that happened in my pregnancy and their first year.

I would definitely recommend Makia The Baby Journal to any parents looking to create a keepsake of them and their little ones.

Emmanuelle — giving her daughter the keepsake she never had

So this is Makia The Baby Journal, and I love it because it’s a gift to my daughter that she will always have, something I didn’t have. All of my mother’s memories were kind of sporadic and all over the place. There was lots of hair and old photos stuck to albums, and just a little bit of info here and there, but having them all in one place just makes it so much easier to carry on and continue.

But it’s also gorgeous and beautifully made, and really special. So yeah, thank you so much.

Juliana — a busy mum of three who just ordered two more for her older daughters

Hello, this is my review for my Makia baby journal. I got this as a gift from my husband over Christmas. I kept the wrapping paper on it because I wanted it to stay clean, and I just absolutely love this book, this journal.

So it’s actually for my son. I have three kids right now. It’s for my youngest son, and it has all of these wonderful and amazing memories in it. It has all of the time that we’ve been together. Sometimes, you know, you forget how awesome it was when they were a baby, and I love this. I just ordered another two for my two daughters that are older, and I cannot express how useful it is and how much value it brings to my life, especially on the quiet days. I sit down and I kind of look through my book, look through my journal.

I take 30 minutes every day, sometimes a week. I gotta admit, I’m a busy mom, but it only takes 30 minutes for me to just sit down, got a few more things to add to it, and I get this amazing copy at the end of the year, and I absolutely love it.

If you’re on the fence of getting it, if you’re not sure, my best advice is get it. You will not regret it. Thank you.

One whole journal, not a dollar amount.

Her gift is the journal itself, so she never has to top it up if prices change.

One of you buys it and signs it from everyone. Settle up between yourselves. Afterpay is there for whoever pays.

For example, four friends: about A$54 each for the Baby Bump Journal, or about A$76 each for the First Year Journal.

At a baby shower

Print the voucher and slip it in a card. The First Year Journal is usually the better shower gift. Showers tend to be late in the pregnancy, and her Digital journal starts when she redeems it, so she can open it when the baby arrives.

For a couple

Put both their names in “Who is it for?”.

For a group, giving it with the hardcover means there’s nothing left for her to pay.

Anything else on your mind?

She has three years from the day you buy it to redeem it. Her 18 months of the Digital journal start when she redeems it, so a gift from early pregnancy isn’t used up before the baby arrives.

With the hardcover, she gets the Digital journal and the linen hardcover, both paid for. The Digital journal on its own doesn’t include the hardcover. Her gift lets her add it at the pre-order price, A$154 for the Baby Bump Journal or A$203 for the First Year Journal, whenever she’s ready.

If she’s on a free trial of the same journal, your gift upgrades it and keeps everything she has written. If she has already bought that journal for this baby, the gift can’t go on it again. She can use it for another child instead. Not sure? Choose the other journal, or ask someone close to her.

Yes. When she redeems it, she chooses which child it’s for, or “It’s for someone new”.

Yes. You can pay by card or Afterpay.

Shipping is free to Australia and New Zealand. She orders the book from the app when her journal is done. Making the book can take up to 14 days after she orders it, and delivery takes extra time.
